Welcome to the Rocks Discovery Museum
Step back in time and uncover the layers of history that make The Rocks one of Sydney’s most fascinating places. Welcome to The Rocks Discovery Museum, a treasure trove of stories, artefacts, and experiences that bring the past to life.
Hidden away from the hustle and bustle of Sydney, The Rocks Discovery Museum is housed within three historically significant buildings, dating back to 1844.
The oldest of these buildings serves as the reception area and was originally the residence of William Samson. Samson's humble cottage consisted of two stories and three rooms. built from locally made brick and locally quarried sandstone.
The building was reconstructed in 1991, based on an early photo, and incorporating surviving walls.
In the early 20th century, the house served as temporary accommodation for Chinese immigrants arriving in Sydney. Various artefacts from this period are displayed in the museum, including small medicine bottles, and an earthenware cooking pot.
These items are exhibited in a display cabinet near the museum's entrance. Earthenware pots similar to those displayed are still used for cooking in China today, and the small bottles feature Chinese script on their bases.
The outline of the old chimney with its fireplace, which adjoins the sandstone stores building, is painted white. This clearly illustrates the size of the original building and its integration into the streetscape of Kendall Lane.
This museum is more than just a collection of objects. It’s an insight into the lives of the people who shaped this place—from the Gadigal people, the original custodians of the land, to the convicts, settlers, and merchants who transformed it into a thriving port town.
Here, we journey through time, exploring four key eras: the First Australians, the arrival of the British colony, the bustling maritime trade of the 19th century, and the conservation efforts that preserved this historic district.
Each exhibit reveals a different facet of The Rocks, a place where cultures converged, fortunes were made, and the foundations of modern Sydney were laid.
The Rocks Discovery Museum isn’t just about artefacts; it’s about the people behind them. Each object, from ancient tools to colonial documents, has a story to tell. And today, you’ll get to walk in their footsteps, imagining life as it was over thousands of years.
As you step into this space, keep in mind that history isn’t just something we look back on—it’s something we carry with us, shaping our present and future.
Let’s begin our journey at the very heart of Sydney’s story.
